Olden
June 19
On Monday morning we found ourselves sailing into the port of Olden. The tender boats were used to bring us ashore for our excursions. The excursion Martha and I picked was Briksdal Glacier with Troll Cars. Our daily program says, “Briksdal Glacier lies at the end of the enchanting Oldedalen Valley and is part of the Jostedal glacier ice field, which is the largest glacier on the European mainland.” A bus took us inland to a lodge where we got into something they called a troll car; you can see them in some of the photos below. These let us out closer to the glacier, but it was still about a half mile hike to get up to where we got the best view of it. I’ve included a bunch of photos including a panorama shot.
Back on the ship in mid afternoon, we attended the second of our science lectures; Neolithic Orkney & Shetland, “A 5,000-year-old Way of Life & Death” by our archeologist, Gillian Howell (also known as “The Muddy Archeologist”). We then got a dance lesson from Sonia of the Ballet Paris C’Show in a form of dance called Bachata. Needing some rest before dinner, we skipped the lecture from our geologist on glaciers and ice sheets.
Now here are some of the videos I took that day. First is a portion of the troll car ride up to the glacier.
This next one is just a quick look at the glacier and the surrounding area, which is beautiful.
And finally, the bus stopped at this location by the big body of water called Oldevatnet for no other reason that i can remember other than it’s beautiful, which is really all the reason that I need.
